Every October, the capital district honors employers who hire, promote or provide access for workers with disabilities in nine county regions as a part of this national initiative. As many as one in five Americans have disabilities. Seventy percent, remain unemployed. This is not by choice.
We All Chase the Same Dreams
Part of a month long "We All Chase The Same Dreams" disability awareness celebration, the local National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM) committee is composed of a dedicated group of business representatives working along with public and non profit human service agencies from Albany, Columbia, Greene, Rensselaer, Saratoga, Schenectady, Schoharie, Warren, and Washington counties. Across the country, in October, National Disability Employment Awareness Month, select employers who have hired, promoted and/or provided access for persons with disabilities are honored.
Two out of three of those with a disability who are not employed say they would prefer to be working. Any efforts that lead to their becoming employed are good investments that will benefit these individuals, the workforce, and the economy. This good business practice is brought to the forefront every October by National Disabilities Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM) activities.
The NDEAM Committee and the Job Service Employer Committees (JSEC) of these nine Capital Region counties join together to honor employers who have provided accessible work environments and employment opportunities for persons with disabilities.
In addition, an Entrepreneur of the Year award is presented to an individual with a disability who has established a successful business.
